Formed in 1978 in Liverpool, England, by singer Ian McCulloch, guitarist Will Sergeant and bassist Les Pattinson, the band were initially supported only by a drum machine until Pete de Freitas was recruited as drummer. Their first album, “Crocodiles,” released in 1980, was a massive success, reaching number 17 on the UK Albums Chart. Reflecting on themes of sorrow and darkness, the album was also well received by critics, given 4/5 stars by most publications and described by NME as "being probably the best album this year by a British band”.
Similarly, Violent Femmes, formed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1980,saw instant success with their first, selt-titled debut in 1983. Despite having not appeared on the Billboard 200, the album went Gold 4 years after its release, and Platinum 4 years after that!! Allmusic described the album as "one of the most distinctive records of the early alternative movement and an enduring cult classic… the music also owes something to the Modern Lovers' minimalism, but powered by Brian Ritchie's busy acoustic bass riffing and the urgency and wild abandon of punk rock, the Femmes forged a sound all their own”.
